A BEC made up of tens of thousands of particles therefore behaves as if it were just one single giant quantum particle.<\/p>\n<p>An international team of researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/uol.de\/en\/physik\/forschung\/forschungsgebiete\/standard-titel\/personen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Anton-Solanas and Christian Schneider from the University of Oldenburg, Germany<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de\/tep\/startseite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sven H\u00f6fling of the University of W\u00fcrzburg, Germany<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.engineering.asu.edu\/tongay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sefaattin Tongay at Arizona State University, US<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.westlake.edu.cn\/academics\/School_of_Science\/Physics\/Our_Faculty\/201912\/t20191206_2488.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexey Kavokin of Westlake University in China<\/a>, has now generated a BEC from quasiparticles known as exciton-polaritons in atomically thin crystals. These quasiparticles form when excited electrons in solids couple strongly with photons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevices that can control these novel light-matter states hold the promise of a technological leap in comparison with current electronic circuits,\u201d explains Anton-Solanas, who is in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uol.de\/en\/quantum-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quantum materials group<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/uol.de\/en\/physics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oldenburg\u2019s Institute of Physics<\/a>. \u201cSuch optoelectronic circuits, which operate using light instead of electric current, could be better and faster at processing information than today\u2019s processors.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When particles are cooled down to temperatures just above absolute zero, they form a BEC \u2013 a state of matter in which all the particles occupy the same quantum state and thus act in unison, like a superfluid.
