Rocket propellant depends on oxygen, and future explorers will depend on producing propellant on Mars to make the trip home.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The instrument, called the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE), is a technology demonstration that could eventually be scaled up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/moxie-could-help-future-rockets-launch-off-mars\" class=\"\">produce enough propellant<\/a> to enable a crew of astronauts to take off from the surface of the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a critical first step at converting carbon dioxide to oxygen on Mars,\u201d said Jim Reuter, associate administrator of NASA\u2019s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), in <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/news\/8926\/nasas-perseverance-mars-rover-extracts-first-oxygen-from-red-planet\/\" class=\"\">a statement<\/a>. \u201cMOXIE has more work to do, but the results from this technology demonstration are full of promise as we move toward our goal of one day seeing humans on Mars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOxygen isn\u2019t just the stuff we breathe,\u201d he added. \u201cRocket propellant depends on oxygen, and future explorers will depend on producing propellant on Mars to make the trip home.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oxygen isn\u2019t just the stuff we breathe.
