Note: It\u2019s a completely separate program from the Air Force\u2019s own NGAD\u2014which recently designed, tested, and flew a secret new fighter jet\u2014and will produce a completely separate plane. The two aircraft will almost certainly be quite different, with the Air Force\u2019s jet more optimized for air superiority. It\u2019s likely the two fighters, developed roughly within the same time period, will share much of the same technology.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The U.S. Navy elaborated on its plans to replace the <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a24538\/f-a-18-badass-plane\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a24538\/f-a-18-badass-plane\/\">F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornet<\/a>, saying the service\u2019s next strike fighter will \u201cmost likely be manned.\u201d The jet will probably fly alongside robotic allies, and remotely crewed aircraft could eventually account for six out of 10 planes on a carrier flight deck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we look at it right now, the Next-Gen Air Dominance [NGAD] is a family of systems, which has as its centerpiece the F\/A-XX\u2014which may or may not be manned\u2014platform. It\u2019s the fixed-wing portion of the Next-Gen Air Dominance family of systems,\u201d said Rear Adm. Gregory Harris, the head of the Chief of Naval Operations\u2019 air warfare directorate, during a <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2021\/03\/30\/navy-ngad-will-be-family-of-systems-super-hornet-replacement-likely-a-manned-fighter\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2021\/03\/30\/navy-ngad-will-be-family-of-systems-super-hornet-replacement-likely-a-manned-fighter\">Navy League event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The F\/A-18E\/F Super Hornet dominates Navy\u2019s strike fighter fleet, made up of fighters that can execute both fighter and attack missions. Although the Navy is buying the <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a35281371\/f-35-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a35281371\/f-35-history\/\">F-35C Joint Strike Fighter<\/a>, it\u2019s only purchasing enough of the planes to replace one or two of the four strike fighter squadrons per deployed aircraft carrier. The Navy believes it needs to replace the Super Hornet and its electronic warfare variant, the <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a30771030\/growler-unmanned-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/military\/aviation\/a30771030\/growler-unmanned-navy\/\">EA-18G Growler<\/a>, in the 2030s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NGAD is the Navy\u2019s effort to replace the Super Hornet.
