While the technology isn\u2019t new to tools, it has recently gained traction due to <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/tools\/reviews\/g1358\/12-great-tool-gifts-for-diyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/tools\/reviews\/g1358\/12-great-tool-gifts-for-diyers\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/tools\/reviews\/g1358\/12-great-tool-gifts-for-diyers\/\">some high-profile releases<\/a> by Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrushless motors have been around since the 1960s, being used in industrial and manufacturing applications for [motors that drive] conveyor belts,\u201d says Christian Coulis, cordless product manager for Milwaukee Tools. However, Makita was the first company to use them in power tools. \u201c[It was] first in our assembly division in 2003 for the defense and aerospace industries,\u201d says Wayne Hart, Makita\u2019s communications manager, \u201cand then again in 2009 when we released a brushless three-speed impact driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers claim that brushless tools have added performance and durability and that they\u2019re smarter than the average tool.
