{"id":120915,"date":"2021-03-26T13:22:17","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T20:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/memory-transfer-between-snails-challenges-view-of-how-brain-remembers"},"modified":"2021-03-26T13:22:17","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T20:22:17","slug":"memory-transfer-between-snails-challenges-view-of-how-brain-remembers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/memory-transfer-between-snails-challenges-view-of-how-brain-remembers","title":{"rendered":"Memory transfer between snails challenges view of how brain remembers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/memory-transfer-between-snails-challenges-view-of-how-brain-remembers2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>LOS ANGELES \u2014 UCLA neuroscientists reported Monday that they have transferred a memory from one animal to another via injections of RNA, a startling result that challenges the widely held view of where and how memories are stored in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>The finding from the lab of David Glanzman hints at the potential for new RNA-based treatments to one day restore lost memories and, if correct, could shake up the field of memory and learning.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s pretty shocking,\u201d said Dr. Todd Sacktor, a neurologist and memory researcher at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. \u201cThe big picture is we\u2019re working out the basic alphabet of how memories are stored for the first time.\u201d He was not involved in the research, which was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eneuro.org\/content\/early\/2018\/05\/14\/ENEURO.0038-18.2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published in eNeuro<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eneuro.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online journal<\/a> of the Society for Neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p>Many scientists are expected to view the research more cautiously. The work is in snails, animals that have proven a powerful model organism for neuroscience but whose simple brains work far differently than those of humans. The experiments will need to be replicated, including in animals with more complex brains.
