His skull was mildly flattened, and he was malnourished as a child, as evidenced by the \u201cslightly porous, spongy areas known as porotic hyperostosis, caused by childhood nutritional deficiencies or illnesses\u201d on the sides of his head, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2021-03\/uoc--aam031521.php\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists also found that infections, trauma, scurvy or rickets had triggered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/periostitis\">periostitis <\/a>\u2014chronic swelling and pain\u2014to form in Waal\u2019s arm bones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The remains reveal that Waal was between 35 and 50 years old when he died.
