The U.S. still holds dominant positions, notably in chip design and electronic software tools; ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands has a monopoly on the machines needed to fabricate the best chips; Japan is a key supplier of equipment, chemicals and wafers.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>U.S., European and Japanese automakers are lobbying their governments for help, with Taiwan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/2330:TT\" itemprop=\"StoryLink\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" title=\"Company Overview\" target=\"_blank\">TSMC<\/a> being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-23\/germany-s-altmaier-asks-taiwan-for-more-chips-for-car-industry\" itemprop=\"StoryLink\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" title=\"Germany\u2019s Altmaier Appeals to Taiwan to Boost Chip Supply \" target=\"_blank\">asked to step in<\/a>. Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron discussed the potential for shortages last year and agreed on the need to accelerate Europe\u2019s push to develop its own chip industry, according to a French official with knowledge of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The auto industry\u2019s pleas illustrate how TSMC\u2019s chip-making skills have handed Taiwan political and economic leverage in a world where technology is being enlisted in the great power rivalry between the U.S. and China \u2014 a standoff unlikely to ease under the administration of Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan\u2019s grip on the semiconductor business \u2014 despite being under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-01-25\/china-tests-biden-s-resolve-on-strategic-flash-point-of-taiwan\" itemprop=\"StoryLink\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" title=\"China Tests Biden\u2019s Resolve on Strategic Flash Point of Taiwan\" target=\"_blank\">constant threat of invasion<\/a> by Beijing \u2014 also represents a choke point in the global supply chain that\u2019s giving new urgency to plans from Tokyo to Washington and Beijing to increase self-reliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That\u2019s not to say Taiwan is the only player in the semiconductor supply chain.
