Worse still, the research also quashes any hope for detecting such an unstoppable AI when it\u2019s on the verge of being created.<\/p>\n<p>Slightly less grim is the timetable. By at least one estimate, many decades lie ahead before any such existential computational reckoning could be in the cards for humanity.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside news of AI <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/artificial-intelligence\/machine-learning\/deepminds-ai-shows-itself-to-be-a-worldbeating-world-builder\"> besting humans<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/artificial-intelligence\/machine-learning\/google-ai-learns-classic-arcade-games-from-scratch-would-probably-beat-you-at-them\"> games<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/artificial-intelligence\/machine-learning\/deepmind-achieves-holy-grail\"> chess, Go<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/automaton\/artificial-intelligence\/machine-learning\/ibm-watson-jeopardy-computer-shuts-down-humans\"> Jeopardy<\/a> have come <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-history\/silicon-revolution\/mocking-ai-panic\"> fears<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/computing\/software\/many-experts-say-we-shouldnt-worry-about-superintelligent-ai-theyre-wrong\"> superintelligent machines<\/a> smarter than the best human minds might one day run amok. \u201cThe question about whether superintelligence could be controlled if created is quite old,\u201d says study lead author Manuel Alfonseca, a computer scientist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autonomous_University_of_Madrid\">Autonomous University of Madrid<\/a>. \u201cIt goes back at least to Asimov\u2019s First Law of Robotics, in the 1940s.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It may be theoretically impossible for humans to control a superintelligent AI, a new study finds.
