The Slovenian company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pipistrel-aircraft.com\/\">Pipistrel<\/a> sells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pipistrel-aircraft.com\/aircraft\/electric-flight\/alpha-electro\/#tab-id-2\">Alpha Electro<\/a>, the first electric aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/04\/27\/all-electric-trainer-plane-airworthiness-certification-faa-us\/\">certified as airworthy<\/a> by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018. It\u2019s a welterweight at just 811 pounds (368 kilograms), powered by a 21 kWh battery pack\u2014about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a34046953\/tesla-range-strategy-details\/#:~:text=That's%20a%20gross%20number%2C%20though, between%20100.0%20and%20105.0%20kWh.\">one-fifth<\/a> the power of what you\u2019d find in a Tesla Model S. For about 90 minutes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/aerospace\/aviation\/cheaper-lighter-quieter-the-electrification-of-flight-is-at-hand\">pilot training plane<\/a> will keep you and a companion aloft without burning a drop of fossil fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Those of us without a pilot license will have to wait longer for emissions-free flight\u2014but not much. For all its challenges, 2020 has proven to be a milestone year for electric aviation.
