Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation this week \u2014 physically \u2014 for the 30 gigawatt (GW) wind and solar power project being built in his home state of Gujarat, India.<\/p>\n<p>It was not that long ago that 30 megawatts was a large renewable energy power plant, and 300 megawatts is still considered a large project. 30 gigawatts is <em>30, 000<\/em> megawatts. I know \u2014 it doesn\u2019t really seem to make sense. It can\u2019t be that large \u2026 right?<\/p>\n<p>Well, there\u2019s no way it\u2019s a single standalone project \u2014 but this is apparently a real projects of sorts (series of renewable energy power projects in the same general area) that will reportedly total 30 GW. For some comparison, in total, all across the United States, from Florida to Hawaii, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2020\/12\/15\/100-of-new-us-power-capacity-was-wind-solar-power-in-october\/\">49.45 GW of solar power capacity installed<\/a> from large solar power plants (not including rooftop solar). India plans to have \u201cone project\u201d in one state total 30 GW \u2014 down a bit from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2020\/12\/06\/41-5-gigawatt-hybrid-wind-solar-power-park-in-india\/\">41.5 GW we reported at the beginning of the month<\/a> (unless that is simply a longer-term plan). India itself had only <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_power_by_country\">42.8 GW of solar power capacity<\/a> installed at the end of 2019.
