In a study recently published in <i>Communications Physics<\/i>, researchers from Osaka University generated light bullets with highly controllable velocities.<\/p>\n<p>According to Albert Einstein\u2019s principle of relativity, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/speed+of+light\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">speed of light<\/a> is constant and cannot be exceeded; however, it is possible to control the group velocity of optical pulses.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the spatiotemporal coupling of optical pulses provides an opportunity to control the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/group+velocity\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">group velocity<\/a> of three-dimensional non-diffraction optical wave-packets, known as \u201clight bullets,\u201d in free space.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though it sounds like something straight out of science fiction, controlling the speed of light has in fact been a long-standing challenge for physicists.
