The drug, called ISRIB, has already been shown in laboratory studies to restore memory function months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2017\/07\/407656\/drug-reverses-memory-failure-caused-traumatic-brain-injury\" target=\"_blank\">traumatic brain injury (TBI)<\/a>, reverse cognitive impairments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2017\/07\/407656\/drug-reverses-memory-failure-caused-traumatic-brain-injury\" target=\"_blank\">Down Syndrome<\/a>, prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2018\/10\/412091\/gene-plays-critical-role-noise-induced-deafness\" target=\"_blank\">noise-related hearing<\/a> loss, fight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2018\/05\/410336\/research-finds-achilles-heel-aggressive-prostate-cancer\" target=\"_blank\">certain types of prostate cancer<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsf.edu\/news\/2013\/06\/106816\/memory-boosting-chemical-identified-mice\" target=\"_blank\">enhance cognition<\/a> in healthy animals.<\/p>\n<p>In the new study, published Dec. 1, 2020, in the open-access journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7554\/eLife.62048\" target=\"_blank\">eLife<\/a><\/em>, researchers showed rapid restoration of youthful cognitive abilities in aged mice, accompanied by a rejuvenation of brain and immune cells that could help explain improvements in brain function.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cISRIB\u2019s extremely rapid effects show for the first time that a significant component of age-related cognitive losses may be caused by a kind of reversible physiological \u201cblockage\u201d rather than more permanent degradation,\u201d said <a href=\"http:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/susanna.rosi\" target=\"_blank\">Susanna Rosi<\/a>, PhD, Lewis and Ruth Cozen Chair II and professor in the departments of Neurological Surgery and of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a few doses of an experimental drug can reverse age-related declines in memory and mental flexibility in mice, according to a new study by UC San Francisco scientists.
