{"id":116022,"date":"2020-11-18T12:24:46","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T20:24:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/researchers-hacked-a-robotic-vacuum-cleaner-to-record-speech-and-music-remotely"},"modified":"2020-11-18T12:24:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T20:24:46","slug":"researchers-hacked-a-robotic-vacuum-cleaner-to-record-speech-and-music-remotely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/researchers-hacked-a-robotic-vacuum-cleaner-to-record-speech-and-music-remotely","title":{"rendered":"Researchers hacked a robotic vacuum cleaner to record speech and music remotely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/researchers-hacked-a-robotic-vacuum-cleaner-to-record-speech-and-music-remotely.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It seems these robots could be used to spy on you from home. \ud83d\ude03<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>A team of researchers demonstrated that popular robotic household vacuum cleaners can be remotely hacked to act as microphones.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers\u2014including Nirupam Roy, an assistant professor in the University of Maryland\u2019s Department of Computer Science\u2014collected information from the laser-based <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/navigation+system\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">navigation system<\/a> in a popular vacuum robot and applied <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/signal+processing\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">signal processing<\/a> and deep learning techniques to recover speech and identify <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/television+programs\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">television programs<\/a> playing in the same room as the device.<\/p>\n<p>The research demonstrates the potential for any device that uses light detection and ranging (Lidar) technology to be manipulated for collecting <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/sound\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">sound<\/a>, despite not having a microphone.
