Today, the Japanese giant unveiled a project called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.net\/SonyInfo\/airpeak\/\" target=\"_blank\">Airpeak<\/a>, which will \u201csupport the creativity of video creators to the fullest extent possible,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.net\/SonyInfo\/News\/Press\/202011\/20-091E\/\" target=\"_blank\">a cryptic press release<\/a>. That makes it sound like Sony wants to take on consumer-focused drone makers such as DJI, Parrot and Skydio. Which makes a lot of sense, given Sony\u2019s expertise in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/sony-zv-1-vlogging-camera-review-162822651.html\">compact<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/sony-a7s-iii-mirrorless-camera-review-140041536.html\">full-frame mirrorless camera<\/a> markets. If you\u2019re a vlogger or independent filmmaker that already uses Sony gear, you might be tempted by a drone with similar technology. If nothing else, it would make it easier to color correct and combine footage.<\/p>\n<p>In the press release, though, Sony notes how drones have led to \u201cworkflow efficiency and energy savings in the industrial sector.\u201d It adds: \u201cSony has assigned the \u2018Airpeak\u2019 brand to reflect its aspiration to contribute to the further evolvement and the creation of the unprecedented value through its imaging and sensing technology as well as 3R technologies (Reality, Real-time and Remote) in the drone area.\u201d So it a consumer or enterprise play? We\u2019re hoping its the former. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015-07-22-sony-mobile-drones.html\">already has Aerosense<\/a> \u2014 a business-focused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015-08-24-sony-prototype-drone-video.html\">drone collaboration with ZMP<\/a> \u2014 which specializes in surveying, capturing live events and creating maps from drone imagery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sony wants a bigger piece of the drone market.
