Their technology is particularly promising for applications relying on artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a major breakthrough in the field of electronics. Engineers at EPFL\u2019s Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures (LANES) have developed a next-generation circuit that allows for smaller, faster and more energy-efficient devices\u2014which would have major benefits for artificial-intelligence systems. Their revolutionary technology is the first to use a 2-D material for what\u2019s called a logic-in\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/memory+architecture\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">memory architecture<\/a>, or a single architecture that combines logic operations with a memory function. The research team\u2019s findings appear today in Nature.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the energy efficiency of <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/computer+chips\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">computer chips<\/a> has been limited by the von Neumann architecture they currently use, where <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/data+processing\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">data processing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/data+storage\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">data storage<\/a> take place in two separate units.
