Aircraft carriers and their associated strike groups and air wings are also increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/33787\/air-force-reveals-b-1bs-were-practicing-decapitating-russias-black-sea-fleet-last-week\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at risk<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/36004\/china-tests-long-range-anti-ship-ballistic-missiles-as-u-s-spy-plane-watches-it-all\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">various anti-access<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/20616\/sams-and-anti-ship-missiles-are-now-guarding-chinas-man-made-south-china-sea-islands\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">area-denial capabilities<\/a>, further underscoring the need for weapons with greater range and that are able to prosecute targets faster to help ensure their survival.<\/p>\n<p>At present, the primary air-launched stand-off anti-ship and land-attack missiles available to them are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/22575\/us-navys-old-anti-ship-missile-to-get-new-tricks-after-scoring-six-for-six-at-rimpac\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AGM-84D Harpoon<\/a> anti-ship cruise missile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/product\/SLAM-ER\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the AGM-84H\/K<\/a> Standoff Land Attack Missile-Expanded Response (SLAM-ER), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/32453\/air-force-boss-alludes-to-work-on-new-top-secret-air-launched-anti-ship-weapons\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the AGM-158C<\/a> Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM), all of which are subsonic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe SPEAR flight demonstrator will provide the F\/A-18 Super Hornet and carrier strike group with significant improvements in range and survivability against advanced threat defensive systems,\u201d Mercer, the firm\u2019s SPEAR program manager, added.
