Police have launched a \u201cnegligent homicide\u201d investigation after ransomware disrupted emergency care at D\u00fcsseldorf University Hospital in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The victim<\/strong>: Prosecutors in Cologne say a female patient from D\u00fcsseldorf was scheduled to undergo critical care at the hospital when the September 9 attack disabled systems. When D\u00fcsseldorf could no longer provide care, she was transferred 19 miles (30 kilometers) away to another hospital. The hackers could be held responsible by German police, the BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-54204356\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A tragic first<\/strong>: \u201cIf confirmed, this tragedy would be the first known case of a death directly linked to a cyberattack,\u201d Ciaran Martin, formerly the chief executive of the UK\u2019s National Cyber Security Centre, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/rusi.org\/event\/cyber-attacks-%E2%80%93-what-actual-harm-do-they-cause\">speech<\/a> at the Royal United Services Institute. \u201cAlthough the purpose of ransomware is to make money, it stops systems working. So if you attack a hospital, then things like this are likely to happen.
