Now they may help control the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Two biotech companies are using the tobacco plant, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18616398\/\"><em>Nicotiana benthamiana<\/em><\/a>, as bio-factories to produce a key protein from the coronavirus that can be used in a vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s obvious irony there,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/rjrt.com\/transforming-tobacco\/leadership\/\">James Figlar<\/a>, executive vice president for research and development for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco.
