Turns Out, Mammals Have Those Genes Too"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding-right: 20px\"><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/some-fish-can-regenerate-their-eyes-turns-out-mammals-have-those-genes-too3.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in the future, gene editing may allow retinal regeneration in humans to reverse age-related vision deterioration.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Damage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/retinal-diseases\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355825\">the retina<\/a> is the leading cause of blindness in humans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-created-an-artificial-retina-implant-that-could-restore-vision-to-millions\">affecting millions of people<\/a> around the world. Unfortunately, the retina is one of the few tissues we humans can\u2019t grow back.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike us, other animals such as zebrafish are able to regenerate this tissue that\u2019s so crucial to our power of sight. We share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-get-another-step-closer-to-growing-replacement-body-organs\">70 percent of our genes<\/a> with these tiny little zebrafish, and scientists have just discovered some of the shared genes include the ones that grant zebrafish the ability to grow back their retinas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegeneration seems to be the default status, and the loss of that ability happened at multiple points on the evolutionary tree,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/news\/newsroom\/news-releases\/johns-hopkins-scientists-find-mammals-share-gene-pathways-that-allow-zebrafish-to-grow-new-eyes\">said<\/a> Johns Hopkins University neuroscientist Seth Blackshaw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps in the future, gene editing may allow retinal regeneration in humans to reverse age-related vision deterioration.
