Why haven\u2019t we sent a rover to Venus, our other next door planetary neighbor? Because the caustic surface of Venus will incinerate electronics with its 872\u00ba F temperatures and seize mechanical components with its immense atmospheric pressures. At 90 times the surface pressure of Earth, the surface of Venus is the equivalent of being almost 3,000 feet underwater.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exploration_of_Mars#Mars_Curse\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exploration_of_Mars#Mars_Curse\">Great Galactic Ghoul<\/a> might devour half the spacecraft we send to Mars, but Venus torched any ghouls living there long ago.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, NASA recently took a big step toward achieving the dream of a Venusian rover. As <a class=\"\" data-tracking-id=\"recirc-text-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/solar-system\/a25099\/nasa-develops-a-computer-chip-venus\/As%20reported%20by%20Ars%20Technica\" target=\"_blank\">reported by<\/a> <em data-redactor-tag=\"em\" data-verified=\"redactor\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/solar-system\/a25099\/nasa-develops-a-computer-chip-venus\/As%20reported%20by%20Ars%20Technica\">Ars Technica<\/a><\/em>, researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/aip.scitation.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1063\/1.4973429\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"http:\/\/aip.scitation.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1063\/1.4973429\">built a computer chip that survived Venus-like conditions for an impressive 521 hours<\/a>, almost 22 days.
