That\u2019s why we\u2019re incredibly excited about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psfk.com\/2014\/07\/student-invents-artificial-leaf-produce-oxygen.html#!brUIt4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>the news<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>that Julian Melchiorri, a design student at the Royal College of Art, has created the first man-made, biologically functional leaf. Christened \u2018The Silk Leaf\u2019, it\u2019s the ultimate in \u2018green\u2019 technology in more ways than one.<\/p>\n<p>The leaf contains <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chloroplast\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>chloroplasts<\/strong><\/a> taken from real plant cells, which are suspended in a silk protein material. When this comes into contact with carbon dioxide, water and light, it converts it into oxygen, just like a real plant.<\/p>\n<p>The advantages are obvious.
