Now researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that transplanting neurons grown from stem cells into the brains of mice with Parkinson\u2019s disease repaired the damaged brain circuits, improving the animals\u2019 motor skills.<\/p>\n<p>In people afflicted with Parkinson\u2019s, neurons that produce dopamine begin to break down and die. The disease gradually presents as tremors, involuntary movements, and trouble with walking, speaking and other actions. While it currently can\u2019t be cured, studies are suggesting new ways to slow progression and reduce severity of symptoms through <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/medical\/experimental-parkinsons-drug-involuntary-movement\/\">new drugs<\/a> or <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/experimental-cancer-drug-parkinsons\/57481\/\">repurposed old ones<\/a>, <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/medical\/deep-brain-stimulation-slow-parkinsons-progression-early-stage\/\">deep brain stimulation<\/a> or <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/medical\/gut-bacteria-microbiome-reduce-prevent-parkinsons-disease\/\">probiotic treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But an emerging and potentially ground-breaking treatment involves stem cells. In several studies, researchers have used stem cells to grow new dopamine-producing neurons, and then transplant them into animals.
