One goal is to harness materials\u2019 quantum properties for communications that go beyond what\u2019s possible with conventional electronics. Topological insulators\u2014materials that act mostly as insulators but carry electric current across their surface\u2014provide some tantalizing possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExploring the complexity of topological materials\u2014along with other intriguing emergent phenomena such as <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/magnetism\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">magnetism<\/a> and superconductivity\u2014is one of the most exciting and challenging areas of focus for the materials science community at the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Brookhaven National Laboratory,\u201d said Peter Johnson, a senior physicist in the Condensed Matter Physics &amp; Materials Science Division at Brookhaven. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to understand these topological insulators because they have lots of potential applications, particularly in quantum information science, an important new area for the division.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, materials with this split insulator\/conductor personality exhibit a separation in the energy signatures of their surface electrons with opposite \u201cspin.\u201d This quantum property could potentially be harnessed in \u201cspintronic\u201d devices for encoding and transporting information.
