Stories of their gargantuan size littered the tales of ancient seafarers and historian throughout millennia, but sometimes their massive corpses washed up on shores, so we knew they existed as more than the seeming myths they had been for centuries. Then in 2004 mankind finally captured our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1559985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first images<\/a> of one alive in Japanese waters. Even then it took eight more years for someone to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/giant-squid-filmed-in-its-natural-environment-1.12202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">film one<\/a> swimming along Japan\u2019s shores. Despite growing to enormous sizes \u2013 females can reach 43 feet in length, males 33 feet \u2013 they have proven to be among the most elusive creatures on Earth, monsters hiding <a href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/first-ever-video-baby-nautilus-hatching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deep below the surface<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And now researchers have finally captured footage of one swimming in U.S. waters.<\/p>\n<p>This video of the infamous cephalopod, which we first heard about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/giant-squid-footage-gulf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at <em>Popular Science<\/em><\/a>, comes from an NOAA team. On June 19 in the Gulf of Mexico, during only their fifth deployment of their Medusa exploratory deep sea probe, the team recorded a young giant squid, approximately 10\u201312 feet in length, swimming at the camera in a flurry of tentacles and nightmares\/dreams (depending on how you feel about the ocean and <a href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/mysterious-long-arm-squid-is-a-lovecraftian-horror-of-the-deep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its horrifying beasts<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years giant squids were the closest thing we had to a real-life, underwater Sasquatch.
