{"id":112506,"date":"2020-09-04T15:23:24","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T22:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/new-evidence-that-the-quantum-world-is-even-stranger-than-we-thought"},"modified":"2020-09-04T15:23:24","modified_gmt":"2020-09-04T22:23:24","slug":"new-evidence-that-the-quantum-world-is-even-stranger-than-we-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/09\/new-evidence-that-the-quantum-world-is-even-stranger-than-we-thought","title":{"rendered":"New evidence that the quantum world is even stranger than we thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/new-evidence-that-the-quantum-world-is-even-stranger-than-we-thought2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>New experimental evidence of a collective behavior of electrons to form \u201cquasiparticles\u201d called \u201canyons\u201d has been reported by a team of scientists at Purdue University.<\/p>\n<p>Anyons have characteristics not seen in other <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/subatomic+particles\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">subatomic particles<\/a>, including exhibiting fractional charge and fractional statistics that maintain a \u201cmemory\u201d of their interactions with other quasiparticles by inducing quantum mechanical phase changes.<\/p>\n<p>Postdoctoral research associate James Nakamura, with assistance from research group members Shuang Liang and Geoffrey Gardner, made the discovery while working in the laboratory of professor Michael Manfra is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy, Purdue\u2019s Bill and Dee O\u2019Brien Chair Professor of Physics and Astronomy, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and professor of materials engineering.
