To find out, a team led by Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al professor Guillaume Lettre created an international consortium to study the blood of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the largest studies of its kind, published today in <i>Cell<\/i>, close to 750,000 participants from five major populations\u2014European, African, Hispanic, East Asian and South Asian\u2014were tested to see the effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/genetic+mutations\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">genetic mutations<\/a> on characteristics in their <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/blood\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">blood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These characteristics include such things as hemoglobin concentration and platelet counts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s the risk of different human populations to develop a disease?
