The space agency\u2019s satellites and spacecraft are particularly vulnerable to the weakened magnetic field strength within the anomaly, and the resulting exposure to charged particles from the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-anomaly-weakening-earth-s-magnetic-field-seems-to-be-splitting-into-two\">likened by NASA<\/a> to a \u2018dent\u2019 in Earth\u2019s magnetic field, or a kind of \u2018pothole in space\u2019 \u2013 generally doesn\u2019t affect life on Earth, but the same can\u2019t be said for orbital spacecraft (including the International Space Station), which pass directly through the anomaly as they loop around the planet at low-Earth orbit altitudes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NASA is actively monitoring a strange anomaly in Earth\u2019s magnetic field: a giant region of lower magnetic intensity in the skies above the planet, stretching out between South America and southwest Africa.
