There\u2019s acoustic tweezers, which use the force of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Acoustic_tweezers#Acoustic_radiation_force\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acoustic radiation<\/a> to control tiny objects. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nobel-prize-physics-2018-tools-made-light-donna-strickland-arthur-ashkin-gerard-mourou-first-woman-55-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Optical tweezers<\/a> made of lasers exploit the force of light. Not content with that, now physicists have made a device to manipulate materials using the force of\u2026 nothingness.<\/p>\n<p>OK, that may be a bit simplistic. When we say nothingness, we\u2019re really referring to the attractive force that arises between two surfaces in a vacuum, known as the Casimir force. The new research has provided not just a way to use it for no-contact object manipulation, but also to measure it.<\/p>\n<p>The implications span multiple fields, from chemistry and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gravitational-waves\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"gravitational wave\">gravitational wave<\/a> astronomy all the way down to something as fundamental and ubiquitous as metrology \u2014 the science of measurement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists can use some pretty wild forces to manipulate materials.
