{"id":110799,"date":"2020-08-03T10:27:39","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T17:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/a-residential-vanadium-flow-battery"},"modified":"2020-08-03T10:27:39","modified_gmt":"2020-08-03T17:27:39","slug":"a-residential-vanadium-flow-battery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/a-residential-vanadium-flow-battery","title":{"rendered":"A residential vanadium flow battery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/a-residential-vanadium-flow-battery2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Munich-based residential vanadium redox flow battery start-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/press-releases\/ees-europe-2018-pioneering-innovations-for-the-electricity-storage-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VoltStorage<\/a> has secured another $7 million from investors including the Bayern Kapital subsidiary of the development bank of Bavaria; family investment house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/press-releases\/sitemark-3-0-has-lift-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Korys<\/a>; the EU-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2017\/07\/11\/innoenergy-makes-funding-for-innovation-available-year-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EIT Innoenergy<\/a>, New Jersey-based venture capital fund and seed investor SOSV and Zurich power company Energie 360.<\/p>\n<p>The firm claims its flow battery system can complete more than 10,000 charge cycles without any effect on capacity and says its electrolyte is a recyclable, non-flammable vanadium solution. VoltStorage\u2019s modular unit reportedly offers a continuous power rating of 1.5 kW and nominal energy of 6.2 kWh. The unit comes with a ten-year warranty.<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2020\/07\/22\/new-all-iron-redox-flox-battery-for-renewables-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">flow battery chemistries<\/a>, including zinc-bromine, zinc-iron, zinc-cerium and magnesium-vanadium have been studied with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2020\/03\/17\/uk-deals-for-vanadium-redox-flow-merger-and-electric-vehicles-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vanadium redox<\/a> the closest to wide commercialization. Vanadium, the dominant cost in the electrolyte, is a metal mined in Russia, China and South Africa although there are reserves in the U.S. and Canada. It is used predominantly as a steel additive.
