{"id":110584,"date":"2020-07-28T19:23:14","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T02:23:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/decline-of-bees-other-pollinators-threatens-us-crop-yields"},"modified":"2020-07-28T19:23:14","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T02:23:14","slug":"decline-of-bees-other-pollinators-threatens-us-crop-yields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2020\/07\/decline-of-bees-other-pollinators-threatens-us-crop-yields","title":{"rendered":"Decline of bees, other pollinators threatens US crop yields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/decline-of-bees-other-pollinators-threatens-us-crop-yields.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crop yields for apples, cherries and blueberries across the United States are being reduced by a lack of pollinators, according to Rutgers-led research, the most comprehensive study of its kind to date.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the world\u2019s crops depend on honeybees and <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/wild+bees\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">wild bees<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/pollination\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">pollination<\/a>, so declines in both managed and wild bee populations raise concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/food+security\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">food security<\/a>, notes the study in the journal <i>Proceedings of the Royal Society B<\/i>: Biological Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that many crops are pollination-limited, meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/crop+production\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">crop production<\/a> would be higher if crop flowers received more pollination. We also found that honey bees and wild bees provided similar amounts of pollination overall,\u201d said senior author Rachael Winfree, a professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. \u201cManaging habitat for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/native+bee+species\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">native bee species<\/a> and\/or stocking more honey bees would boost pollination levels and could increase crop production.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Crop yields for apples, cherries and blueberries across the United States are being reduced by a lack of pollinators, according to Rutgers-led research, the most comprehensive study of its kind to date.
