Within hours, scientists classified the event as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Type_Ia_supernova\">Type Ia supernova<\/a> \u2013 not an unusual stellar event, ordinarily at least, except this time it was accompanied by the extremely rare flash of ultraviolet light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are some of the most common explosions in the Universe,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2020\/07\/spectacular-ultraviolet-flash-may-finally-explain-how-white-dwarfs-explode\/\">says<\/a> astrophysicist Adam Miller from Northwestern University.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A stunning flash of ultraviolet light from an exploding white dwarf has been detected by astronomers for only the second time, and could give researchers important clues about what spurs the demise of these ancient, spent stars.
