However, they have always shown very limited <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/coherence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">coherence<\/a> times, far too short for quantum technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The research published today in <i>Nature Materials<\/i> shows that long coherence times are possible when spin-orbit coupling is strong enough.
