This is not just some Orwellian technology of the future \u2014 it\u2019s being used by law enforcement agencies across the country right now, and doing harm to communities right now,\u201d Fight for the Future deputy director Evan Greer said in a statement shared with VentureBeat and posted online.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Members of the United States Congress introduced a bill today, <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1gkTcjFtieMQdsQ01dmDa49B6HY9ZyKr8\/view\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act of 2020<\/a>, that would prohibit the use of U.S. federal funds to acquire facial recognition systems or \u201cany biometric surveillance system\u201d use by federal government officials. It would also withhold federal funding through the Byrne grant program for state and local governments that use the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The bill is sponsored by Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) as well as Representatives Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). Pressley previously introduced a bill prohibiting use of facial recognition in public housing, while <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2020\/02\/12\/u-s-senators-propose-facial-recognition-moratorium-for-federal-government\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Merkley introduced a facial recognition moratorium bill in February<\/a> with Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ).<\/p>\n<p>The news comes a day after the <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2020\/06\/24\/boston-bans-facial-recognition-due-to-concern-about-racial-bias\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Boston City Council in Pressley\u2019s congressional district unanimously passed a facial recognition ban<\/a>, one of the largest cities in the United States to do so. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/24\/882683463\/the-computer-got-it-wrong-how-facial-recognition-led-to-a-false-arrest-in-michig\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">News also emerged this week about Robert Williams<\/a>, who\u2019s thought to be the first person falsely accused of a crime and arrested due to misidentification by facial recognition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cFacial recognition is a uniquely dangerous form of surveillance.
