These bottles are made from sustainable crops and decompose within a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">bottle<\/a> is made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/animalsandnature\/sea-turtles-are-eating-plastic-because-it-smells-like-food\/\">plant sugars<\/a> instead of traditional fossil fuels. Avantium is the company behind the bottle. They have already found support from beer company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">Carlsberg<\/a>, who plans to sell a plant-plastic lined cardboard bottle in future beverage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">releases<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/news\/coca-cola-pepsico-pg-and-nestle-sued-over-creating-plastic-waste-and-destroying-the-planet\/\">Coca-Cola<\/a> and Danone have also backed the product.<\/p>\n<p>Avantium\u2019s chief executive, Tom van Aken told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">Guardian<\/a> that the plan should be finalized by the end of the year, with the bottles hitting supermarket shelves by 2023. \u201cThis plastic has very attractive sustainability credentials because it uses no fossil fuels, and can be recycled \u2013 but would also degrade in nature much faster than normal plastics do,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/16\/the-end-of-plastic-new-plant-based-bottles-will-degrade-in-a-year\">says<\/a> Van Aken.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new \u201call-plant\u201d drink bottle is underway at a Netherlands biochemicals company.
