GM and Michelin have <a href=\"https:\/\/media.gm.com\/media\/us\/en\/gm\/home.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2019\/jun\/0604-michelin.html\">unveiled<\/a> a prototype of Uptis (Unique Puncture-proof Tire System), a Michelin-made tire intended for passenger cars. It looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2005\/01\/05\/michelins-tweel-combination-air-less-tire-and-wheel\/\">Tweel<\/a> and other air-free concepts of years past, but its mix of composite rubber and resin embedded fiberglass lets it operate at highway speeds \u2014 earlier options tend to work only when you\u2019re slowly putting around. It\u2019s not as visually appealing as conventional tires, but Michelin claims it\u2019s just as comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, there\u2019s a tangible roadmap. GM will start testing the Uptis in Michigan later in 2019 on a fleet of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017\/01\/27\/2017-chevy-bolt-ev-review\/\">Chevy Bolts<\/a>, and expects the finished version to reach production cars as soon as 2024.
