Researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/\">DeepMind<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a> seem to think so. They built an AI-powered virtual rat that can carry out multiple complex tasks. Then, they used neuroscience techniques to understand how its artificial \u201cbrain\u201d controls its movements.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s most advanced AI is powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/robotics\/artificial-intelligence\/the-next-frontier-in-ai-nothing\">artificial neural networks <\/a>\u2014machine learning algorithms made up of layers of interconnected components called \u201cneurons\u201d that are loosely inspired by the structure of the brain. While they operate in very different ways, a growing number of researchers believe drawing parallels between the two could both improve our understanding of neuroscience and make <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/tech-talk\/artificial-intelligence\/machine-learning\/yoshua-bengio-revered-architect-of-ai-has-some-ideas-about-what-to-build-next\">smarter AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now the authors of <a href=\"https:\/\/openreview.net\/forum?id=SyxrxR4KPS\">a new paper<\/a> due to be presented this week at the <a href=\"https:\/\/iclr.cc\/\">International Conference on Learning Representations<\/a> have created a biologically accurate 3D model of a rat that can be controlled by a neural network in a simulated environment. They also showed that they could use neuroscience techniques for <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/video\/biomedical\/imaging\/how-to-digitize-a-rat-brain\">analyzing biological brain activity<\/a> to understand how the neural net controlled the rat\u2019s movements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can we study AI the same way we study lab rats?
