In its heyday, the ILVA steel plant produced more than 10 million tons of steel every year\u2014about 40 percent of all the steel made in Italy\u2014and it currently employs about 12,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>This is no small deal in an area where unemployment is north of 20 percent; indeed, the local economy of Taranto, population 200,000, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/IDAN\/2015\/563471\/IPOL_IDA(2015)563471_EN.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> is almost entirely dependent on the steel mill<\/a> \u2014which is also one of the biggest and most deadly polluters of anywhere in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>The plant is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthisland.org\/journal\/index.php\/elist\/eListRead\/the_steel_plant_decimating_an_italian_city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> a notorious source of dioxin<\/a>, and dust from the plant is believed to be the reason why Taranto has a lung cancer rate 30 percent higher than the national average. It\u2019s so toxic that farmers have been forbidden from raising livestock within a 20-kilometer radius of the plant; in 2008, the government <a href=\"http:\/\/ecologic.eu\/sites\/files\/news\/2015\/efface_environmental_and_corporate_mis-compliance.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> ordered the slaughter<\/a> of thousands of sheep and other animals that were found to have excessively high levels of dioxin.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Europe\u2019s largest steel mill is in the city of Taranto in southern Italy.
