From the moment we\u2019re born, it is intimately involved in every physical interaction we have.<\/p>\n<p>Though scientists have studied the <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/sense+of+touch\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">sense of touch<\/a>, or haptics, for more than a century, many aspects of how it works remain a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/touch\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">touch<\/a> is not fully understood, even though it is at the heart of our ability to interact with the world,\u201d said UC Santa Barbara haptics researcher Yon Visell. \u201cAnything we do with our hands\u2014picking up a glass, signing our name or finding keys in our bag\u2014none of that is possible without the sense of touch.
