A big problem. It\u2019s, well, space. It\u2019s way too big. Even travelling at the maximum speed the Universe allows, it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/former-nasa-scientist-demonstrates-why-star-trek-s-warp-speeds-are-painfully-slow\">take us years<\/a> to reach our nearest neighbouring star.<\/p>\n<p>But another human drive is finding solutions to big problems. And that\u2019s what NASA engineer David Burns has been doing in his spare time. He\u2019s produced an engine concept that, he says, could theoretically accelerate to 99 percent of the speed of light \u2014 all without using propellant.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s posted it to the NASA Technical Reports Server under the heading \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/search.jsp?R=20190029657\">Helical Engine<\/a>\u201d, and, on paper, it works by exploiting the way mass can change at relativistic speeds \u2014 those close to the speed of light in a vacuum.
