The First Human-Monkey Hybrid Embryo Was Just Created in China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/wait-what-the-first-human-monkey-hybrid-embryo-was-just-created-in-china2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The news did not sit well with Chinese scientists, who are still recovering from the <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2018\/12\/04\/welcome-to-the-crispr-baby-world-heres-what-you-should-know\/\">CRISPR baby scandal<\/a>. \u201cIt makes you wonder, if their reason for choosing to do this in a Chinese laboratory is because of our <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2018\/12\/04\/crispr-babies-stumbling-over-mankinds-next-giant-leap\/\">high-tech experimental setups<\/a>, or because of <a href=\"https:\/\/singularityhub.com\/2019\/06\/20\/crispr-in-russia-the-worlds-next-gene-edited-babies-may-not-be-far-away\/\">loopholes in our laws<\/a>?\u201d lamented one anonymous commentator on China\u2019s popular social media app, WeChat.<\/p>\n<p>Their frustration is understandable. Earlier in April, a team from southern China came under international fire for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/201904\/02\/WS5ca31228a3104842260b3fa3.html\">sticking extra copies<\/a> of human \u201cintelligence-related\u201d genes into macaque monkeys. And despite efforts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/201905\/11\/WS5cd60adfa3104842260bb117.html\">revamp its reputation<\/a> in biomedical research ethics, China does have slacker rules in primate research compared to Western countries.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling icked out, you\u2019re not alone. The morality and ethics of growing human-animal hybrids are far from clear.
