It seemed like a prudent idea to develop a quick response to emerging infectious diseases. Researchers working under the program sought ways to confer instant (but short-term) protection from a dangerous virus or bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Today, as the novel coronavirus causes a <a href=\"https:\/\/gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/opsdashboard\/index.html#\/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6\">skyrocketing number of COVID-19 cases<\/a> around the world, the researchers are racing to apply their experimental techniques to a true pandemic playing out in real time. \u201cRight now, they have one shot on goal,\u201d says DARPA program manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/staff\/dr-amy-jenkins\">Amy Jenkins<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re really hoping it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The P3 program\u2019s plan was to start with a new pathogen and to \u201cdevelop technology to deliver medical countermeasures in under 60 days\u2014which was crazy, unheard of,\u201d says Jenkins. The teams have proven they can meet this ambitious timeline in previous trials using the influenza and Zika viruses.
