The last probe that landed on Venus\u2019 hellish surface was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vega_2\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Vega 2<\/a> mission in 1985; it transmitted data from Venus\u2019 surface for 57 minutes. Now NASA wants to visit Venus\u2019 surface again, not with just another lander \u2026 but with a <em>rover<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On February 21, 2020, NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/news.php?feature=7604&utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=nasajpl&utm_content=daily-20200221-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced a public challenge<\/a> to help design a future Venus rover called Automaton Rover for Extreme Environments (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/automaton-rover-for-extreme-environments-aree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AREE<\/a>). The challenge \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.herox.com\/VenusRover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Exploring Hell: Avoiding Obstacles on a Clockwork Rover<\/a> \u2013 is specifically to develop an obstacle-avoidance sensor for the rover. The concept is being funded by a grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/niac\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts<\/a> program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Artist\u2019s concept of the AREE Venus rover.
