Because <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_polyglots\">internet lists<\/a> of polyglots identify mainly men, there\u2019s the belief that the male brain is more predisposed to multilingualism. Others believe that polyglots are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/politics\/education\/2015\/08\/man-who-speaks-32-languages-and-counting\">disproportionately gay and\/or left-handed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These unfounded theories infuriate Ev Fedorenko, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). <a href=\"https:\/\/evlab.mit.edu\/\">Her lab<\/a> is conducting a study seeking to dispel them and establish a basic understanding of how the polyglot brain works.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a polyglot named Susanna Zaraysky submitted to a two-hour session of tests inside an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/info.cfm?pg=fmribrain\"> fMRI machine<\/a>. Zaraysky speaks nine languages, most of them the usual suspects \u2014 French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian \u2014 but also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sephardicstudies.org\/quickladino.html\">Ladino, the version of Spanish spoken by Jews who were expelled from Spain in the 15th century<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are more theories than facts about polyglots.
