The news has been turning into science fiction<\/a> for a while now. TVs that watch the watcher<\/a>, growing tiny kidneys<\/a>, 3D printing<\/a>, the car of tomorrow<\/a>, Amazon\u2019s fleet of delivery drones<\/a> \u2013 so many news stories now \u201csound like science fiction<\/a>\u201d that the term returns 1,290,000 search results on Google.<\/p>\n

The pace of technological innovation is accelerating so quickly that it\u2019s possible to perform this test in reverse. Google an imaginary idea from science fiction and you\u2019ll almost certainly find scientists researching the possibility. Warp drive<\/a>? The Multiverse<\/a>? A space elevator to the stars<\/a>? Maybe I can formulate this as Walter\u2019s law \u2013 \u201cAny idea described in sci-fi will on a long enough timescale be made real by science.\u201d<\/p>\n
