But using a bionic eye developed by Spanish neuroengineer Eduardo Fernandez, she was able to see again \u2014 without using her biological eyes at all.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/webvision.org.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">system<\/a>, which Fernandez is honing at his University of Miguel Hernandez lab, comprises a few different parts, as detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/615148\/a-new-implant-for-blind-people-jacks-directly-into-the-brain\/\">newly-published<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/615148\/a-new-implant-for-blind-people-jacks-directly-into-the-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">story<\/a> in <em>MIT Technology Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>First, there\u2019s a pair of glasses fitted with a camera that connects to a computer. The computer translates the camera\u2019s live video feed into electronic signals. Those signals are then sent via a cable to a port that Fernandez surgically embedded in the back of G\u00f3mez\u2019s skull.
