Now for the first time in the U.S., researchers say they\u2019ve shown that CRISPR-edited immune cells can be safely given to cancer patients and survive for up to nine months\u2014a finding that may signal CRISPR\u2019s future as part of an emerging cancer treatment known as immunotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that we can <a class=\"\" data-ga=\"[[\u201d Embedded Url\u201d,\u201d External link\u201d,\u201d https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/treatment\/treatments-and-side-effects\/treatment-types\/immunotherapy\/what-is-immunotherapy.html\u201d,{\u201cmetric25\u201d:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/treatment\/treatments-and-side-effects\/treatment-types\/immunotherapy\/what-is-immunotherapy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boost the human immune system<\/a> to help it fight off cancer isn\u2019t new. But it\u2019s only recently that researchers have been able to make substantial advances in the field. There are different techniques, but one that\u2019s received lots of attention involves reprogramming our immune system\u2019s shock troops, known as T cells, to attack cancer.
