Speaking to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-51315462\">BBC<\/a><\/em>, Exscientia chief executive Professor Andrew Hopkins described the trials as a \u201ckey milestone in drug discovery\u201d and noted that there are \u201cbillions\u201d of decisions needed to find the right molecules for a drug, making their eventual creation a \u201chuge decision.\u201d With AI, however, \u201cthe beauty of the algorithm is that they are agnostic, so can be applied to any disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve already seen multiple examples of AI being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-01-27-ibm-ai-predicts-huntingtons-disease-symptoms.html\">diagnose<\/a> illness and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/10\/23\/ai-detects-brain-hemorrhages-ucsf\/\">analyze<\/a> patient data, so using it to engineer drug treatment is an obvious progression of its place in medicine. But the AI-created drugs do pose some pertinent questions. Will patients be comfortable taking medication designed by a machine? How will these drugs differ from those developed by humans alone? Who will make the rules for the use of AI in drug research?
