And preliminary research shows the tower \u2014 which some are calling the world\u2019s largest air purifier \u2014 has cut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/environment\/most-americans-live-areas-unhealthy-levels-air-pollution-study-finds-n559076\">air pollution<\/a> significantly across a broad swath of the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>Given those findings, the researchers behind the project say they hope to build an even taller air-purifying tower in Xi\u2019an, and possibly in other cities around China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to tell my students that we don\u2019t need to be medical doctors to save lives,\u201d said Dr. David Pui, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota and one of the researchers. \u201cIf we can just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/mach\/science\/app-air-pollution-could-be-coming-your-city-ncna772196\">reduce the air pollution in major metropolitan areas<\/a> by 20 percent, for example, we can save tens of thousands of lives each year.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Circa 2018 It may look like just another giant smokestack, but a 200-foot tower in the central Chinese city of Xi\u2019an was built to pull deadly pollutants from the air rather than add more.
