In a world where it seems like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/google-s-ai-built-it-s-own-ai-that-outperforms-any-made-by-humans\">artificial intelligence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ai-just-took-a-big-step-towards-becoming-more-human\">machine learning<\/a> can figure out just about anything, that might seem like heresy \u2013 but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s the case according to a new international study by a team of mathematicians and AI researchers, who discovered that despite the seemingly boundless potential of machine learning, even the cleverest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/ai-machine-learning-solve-all-humanity-problems-unrealistic\">algorithms are nonetheless bound<\/a> by the constraints of mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advantages of mathematics, however, sometimes come with a cost\u2026 in a nutshell\u2026 not everything is provable,\u201d the researchers, led by first author and computer scientist Shai Ben-David from the University of Waterloo, write in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42256-018-0002-3\">their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not everything is knowable.
