Soon afterwards it was renamed the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC). This became the espionage and counter-intelligence branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/2WWcia.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Central Intelligence Agency<\/a>. Wisner was told to create an organization that concentrated on \u201cpropaganda, economic warfare; preventive direct action, including sabotage, anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures; subversion against hostile states, including assistance to underground resistance groups, and support of indigenous anti-Communist elements in threatened countries of the free world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that year Wisner established Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic American media. Wisner recruited <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKgrahamP.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Philip Graham<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Washington Post<\/i><\/a>) to run the project within the industry. Graham himself recruited others who had worked for military intelligence during the war. This included <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKtruitt.htm\" rel=\"internal\">James Truitt<\/a>, Russell Wiggins, Phil Geyelin, John Hayes and Alan Barth. Others like <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/NDstewart_alsop.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Stewart Alsop<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKalsop.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Joseph Alsop<\/a> and James Reston, were recruited from within the <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKgeorgetown.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Georgetown Set<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKdavisD.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Deborah Davis<\/a>, the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Katharine-Great-Graham-Washington-Post\/dp\/0941781135\/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205581528&sr=1-4\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Katharine the Great<\/em><\/a> (1979) : \u201cBy the early 1950s, Wisner \u2018owned\u2019 respected members of the <i>New York Times<\/i>, Newsweek, CBS and other communications vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1951 <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/USAdullesA.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Allen W. Dulles<\/a> persuaded <a href=\"https:\/\/spartacus-educational.com\/JFKmeyerC.htm\" rel=\"internal\">Cord Meyer<\/a> to join the CIA. However, there is evidence that he was recruited several years earlier and had been spying on the liberal organizations he had been a member of in the later 1940s.
